Abstract

The article examines the dynamics of electoral behavior in Western European countries, with an emphasis on the electoral landscape of the European Union member states. The article highlights the specifics of the European electoral geostructure, related to relatively stable party systems, long-term electoral experience, and the persistence of regional models of electoral behavior. In addition to the objective economic reasons for the ongoing shifts, the article identifies situational factors — notably, the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the underlying reasons prove unexpected such as a rightward shift among demographic cohorts, particularly youth, who until recently constituted the traditional electorate of the left.
